Alhaji Dare Olurotimi Abdulganiyu, the Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Kwara State, has applauded Governor AbdulRaman AbdulRasaq’s efforts to mitigate fire hazards in Kwara State.
The State Director gave the applause on Monday at a one day sensitisation campaign organised by the Kwara State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (KWSACReSAL), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment at Ilorin West Local Government Secretariat.
Alh. Dare Abdulganiyu further advocated better funding and resources allocation to ensure that fire services branches are established in local government areas to ensure swift responses to emergencies.
The State Project Coordinator, Alhaji Shamsudeen Aregbe emphasized the vulnerability of this period to fire outbreaks and urged the public to exercise caution with fire usage, particularly advising against improper disposal of cigarette butts to safeguard lives and property.
Dr. Abubakar Ayinla, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, delivered a keynote address on climate change and its connection to bush fires. He advised adherence to weather conditions when undertaking activities that could trigger fire outbreaks.
Honorable Suliat Oyindamola Olowu, representing the Ilorin West Chairman, encouraged residents to avoid burning waste indiscriminately and to promote community awareness by sharing preventive measures with neighbors.
Representing the Commandant of the Kwara State Fire Service, Mallam Hassan Akeem Adekunle urged the public to report fire incidents promptly using emergency contact numbers: 08030419316 or 080258966740.
The event concluded with a robust question-and-answer session where participants’ concerns were addressed, further enhancing public awareness and engagement.
