The Value of A Doctorate Degree?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Nigeria, many people assume that once you earn a PhD, the next natural step is to \u201center class and start lecturing.\u201d But that mindset is limiting and far from the true purpose of a doctoral degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A PhD is not just an academic title \u2014 it is proof that you can identify a problem, investigate it deeply, generate new knowledge, and propose workable solutions. That is why the capstone of the degree is a thesis: a concrete contribution to solving a societal challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 1. Only 1 out of 10 PhD holders in Nigeria work in universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Universities Commission (NUC) records show that the academic system cannot absorb all our PhD holders. Yet, we keep channeling brilliant minds into an already saturated space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 2. A PhD is a problem-solving degree, not a lecturing certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doctoral graduates are needed in policy development, research organizations, NGOs, tech companies, educational think-tanks, curriculum innovation units, private laboratories and consultancy firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your thesis is not meant to decorate shelves \u2014 it is meant to fix something broken in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 3. Countries with strong economies use PhD holders to drive innovation, not just fill teaching slots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the US, fewer than 30% of PhDs teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In China, PhD holders power industrial research hubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Finland, PhDs sit on national education boards influencing direction and reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria needs to move in that direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if you have a PhD, remember this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your calling is not just to lecture \u2014 your calling is to LEAD solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create frameworks. Guide policies. Consult for schools and governments. Establish research centres. Build models that transform education, health, governance, agriculture and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The value of your PhD is not in the title \u2014 it\u2019s in the impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
