Christians have been urged to step out into the political space, shine their light, and make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The admonition was given by speakers at the 2025 Democracy Summit, themed \u201cBuilding Capacity for Christian Leadership in the Nigerian Political Space,\u201d hosted by Rhema Chapel International Churches, held in Ilorin at the church headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event, hosted under the leadership of the Apostolic Oversight, Reverend George Adegboye, brought together, thought leaders, scholars, legal minds, and policymakers across two sessions\u2014Sunday, June 8 and Thursday, June 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Oloruntoba Oju, a distinguished academic and professor of English and Language Studies, delivered a compelling address on the need for morally grounded leadership. He emphasized the importance of character, competence, and conviction in political participation, noting that Christian leaders must move beyond passive commentary to active involvement in shaping Nigeria\u2019s future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Honourable Commissioner for Communications, Kwara State, Mrs. Bola Olukoju, also lent a powerful voice to the summit, commending the church for engaging in nation-building. She highlighted the importance of media literacy, digital engagement, and communication strategies in shaping public opinion and driving political change. Mrs. Olukoju urged Christians to harness modern tools and platforms to promote values-based mentorship and leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While making a case for taking action beyond nere talks, Barrister Teju Oguntoye, a seasoned legal practitioner, challenged attendees to understand the constitution and legal frameworks that define the political landscape. He explained that building capacity is not merely spiritual but involves acquiring technical knowledge of governance and the law to engage meaningfully and influence policies from within the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his submission, Mr. Bamidele John Paul Toluwase, an experienced political strategist, spoke on the power of structure and grassroots mobilization. He shared practical insights on how Christians can build influence, start from local governance levels, and ascend to higher political offices without compromising their values.A<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also speaking, Comrade Adebayo Kayode, a prominent youth leader and civil society advocate, called for boldness and strategic coalition-building. He inspired the younger generation to reject apathy and understand that political power must be taken deliberately. “We cannot afford to sit on the fence. If we do not participate, we surrender leadership to those unfit to lead,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs. Margaret Erinle, a vocal advocate for gender inclusion and political participation, focused her presentation on the underrepresentation of women in Nigerian politics. She encouraged women to be more assertive, support each other, and step into leadership roles across all levels. \u201cThe future of Nigerian democracy is incomplete without women at the decision-making table,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summit ended with a charge to churches and Christian communities across the country to create more intentional leadership development programmes that prepare believers to lead ethically, courageously, and effectively in the public space.Rhema Chapel International Churches, through the event, called for integrity-driven leadership, civic responsibility, and increased participation of Christians in governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highpoints of the summit were spoken word presentation and engaging interactive sessions where practical insights were shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
